The Soft Power of Intention
Giving presence and direction to your breath and life
Have you ever found yourself longing for something—a slower pace, a sense of ease, a quiet morning by the sea?
So often we’re taught to chase outcomes: the dream home, the new opportunity, the perfect routine. But underneath each of those is usually a feeling we’re really after.
Peace.
Freedom.
Connection.
Spaciousness.
Intentions invite us to live from those feelings now—without needing everything else to line up first. They give shape and direction to our inner world, gently guiding the way we move, choose, and relate.
Not as a goal to chase, but as a felt sense we can return to again and again.
Why Set Intentions?
Intentions aren’t about striving. They’re about orienting. They help us connect with what matters—not in a future-tense, check-the-box kind of way, but through our presence and our breath.
They remind us of who we are when we’re not trying to prove, please, or perform.
They offer a soft anchor when the day begins to pull us in different directions.
They return us to the feeling we’re longing to live from.
And when we bring them into our breathwork practice, they begin to move from our head into our body—taking root in a deeper, more nourishing way.
Feel It First
There’s a difference between wanting something and feeling the truth of it in your body.
A goal says: I need to get there.
An intention says: I choose to be here.
Goals are often external, tied to achievement or outcome. Intentions, however, arise from the heart. They aren’t about arriving—they’re about aligning.
They are the energetic undercurrent guiding your life—not to push you forward, but to bring you inward.
And when paired with breathwork, intentions don’t just live in your mind. They move into your body. Into your being. They become something you feel rather than force.
Take the example of wanting a beach house. That may be the goal, but underneath? Maybe it’s the soft rhythm of the waves, the lightness of wide open space, the freedom to move slowly and be present.
It’s rarely the thing—it’s the feeling.
And that feeling? You can begin to breathe it in now. Even before it arrives.
Letting It Go
The beauty of intention is that once it’s felt, it doesn’t need to be held tightly. It doesn’t need to become another thing to manage or measure.
We don’t need to force it into becoming.
We can feel it, breathe with it, and then let it go.
Like an exhale.
Like trust.
It’s not about control. It’s about connection.
A Gentle Practice for Intentional Breath
Here’s a soft way to invite intention into your breath:
Pause. Find a comfortable position—seated or lying down. Let your hands rest on your body: your heart, your belly, wherever feels right.
Breathe Slowly. Inhale gently through your nose for 4 counts. Exhale softly through your nose for 6 counts. Do this for a few rounds, letting your body settle.
Feel for Your Intention. Ask gently, “What feeling am I longing for today?” Let it arise. It might be a word, a memory, or simply a sense.
Let It Live in You. Notice where it shows up in your body. Is there warmth, lightness, or maybe just a softening? If nothing is clear, that’s okay. Stay curious.
Breathe It In. With each inhale, breathe in the essence of that feeling.
With each exhale, let it settle and spread gently.
Let Go. After a few minutes, stop trying to hold the intention. Let it integrate. Trust that your breath will carry it forward.
When You’re Not Sure What You Want…
Sometimes clarity isn’t there. Sometimes all we can say is, “I don’t want to feel like this anymore.”
Even then, you can set an intention.
It might sound like:
“I’m open to feeling something new.”
“I’m willing to be with myself gently.”
“I invite ease—even if I don’t know how.”
Intentions don’t have to be perfect.
They just need to be honest.
Even the smallest spark can light the way.
There is a quiet power in choosing how you want to feel—and letting that choice live in your breath.
You don’t need to chase the life you want.
You can breathe it into being, one moment at a time.
Your breath will meet you there.
